doTERRA Diamonds Discuss : Andrea Ryan

Intro:
Welcome to doTERRA Diamonds Discuss where you'll be inspired by stories, tips, and strategies by doTERRA's top leaders who will then help you turn your passion for holistic wellness into your own profitable and flexible business. And now here's your host Double Presidential Diamond, Hayley Hobson.

Hayley Hobson:
Hello, my friends. Welcome to doTERRA diamonds, discuss where we teach entrepreneurs with a passion for holistic wellness, how to make a six-figure income or more so they can work from home, have the flexibility they've been craving with their time and make more money than they've ever imagined. And we are back with another amazing interview this time with Andrea or Ryan, who is a retired chiropractor, a homeschooling mom, and a doTERRA blue diamond leader. And what I find so inspiring about Andrea's story is that she was able to find her authenticity and her true calling with doTERRA as the vehicle. And once she realized that she could create a business through doTERRA, she was able to use her business as a place for her to share her passion and her wellness, while at the same time, educate others to make more strategic and natural choices for their lives daily. And she was able to turn that, take that passion and turn it into a pretty amazing opportunity and a legacy for her family. So I can't wait for you to hear more about Andrea's journey to diamond and beyond, and we'll just get started right now. Hey Andrea.

Andrea Ryan:
Hi, Haley. Thanks so much for having me on. I'm thrilled to be here.

Hayley Hobson:
Oh my gosh. You're so welcome. I'm so excited to have you on too. Why don't you share with all of us a little bit about yourself, who you are?

Andrea Ryan:
Sure. So as you mentioned, I'm a retired chiropractor. I I'm from Canada. So we are up north of Toronto by about an hour and have my husband's American. We met in school, came back here after our first daughter was born and then have basically lived here for about the last I don't know, 16 years let's say or 15 years. Anyways point is we were both chiropractors. We started in practice together. We ended up having still very much a very successful practice, even though I left it four years ago to focus at the time, full time on doTERRA, just sort of, you know, being able to funnel all of my energy in that way. Mainly just because we'd had three kids at that point, I was juggling doTERRA. I was juggling my practice and with the three kids, it got to be just too much in terms of my hours and so on. So I stepped back from practice, went full time and did doTERRA and motherhood, I suppose. And and just sort of going from there and then continued to build my business at that point and have just been at home ever since working my business. So, yeah,

Hayley Hobson:
I love that. It's a little bit about my it's like a little bit similar to my story too, cuz well, my first life was like as a bankruptcy attorney, a corporate bankruptcy attorney, but I then became, I got into the health and wellness space and gosh, when I think back then, like Haley, you know, 20, 30 years ago, like, you know, like the it's really like bravery to step into something like that. You know what I mean? Like I'm like good girl. Oh my gosh, good for you. Cause I had no idea what was gonna happen. And I was just so interested in making changes to my own body that I, I didn't know how they would allow me to show up later. And then ultimately that led me to my Pilates and yoga practice, health coaching practice, and then where I am with doTERRA as well. So probably a similar but different journey. What got you into holistic health and wellness yourself?

Andrea Ryan:
I had been, I took an interest of it way back in high school. So always knew that I wanted to help be in the healing arts of some Le at some level. My stepmom is a chiropractor in Canada, so I'd been in her practice, just everything from being adjusted to helping out, to volunteering there, to eventually working there part-time and sort of took that on and was very easy to get into that frame of mind when I'm exposed to it at all times. And so I went down to life university down in Atlanta, Georgia completed my degree there. That's where I met Tom, my husband and just, I mean, being exposed in life at life, I should say LifeView it is, there were lots of things. We were exposed to everything from lots of different facets of natural health. So it was very easy for me to kind of understand a little bit about all these different areas, everything from nutrition to different ways to take care of our body.

Andrea Ryan:
A little bit of essential oils, although not a ton. I was familiar with things like, I dunno, tea, tree and lavender, but that was about the extent of my essential oil knowledge. And then when doTERRA popped into my life again through my stepmom, I was, we were up at a cottage. It was early June, a cottage up in Northern Ontario in early June, which is like prime bug season. And my son who was three, I wanna say at the time was covered mosquito bites top, top to bottom. And she gave me lavender and tear shield. And what's funny, like I tell people this all the time, because I think when we're in doTERRA, sometimes we think, oh, we we're always trying to attract in those people with the large collections and wanna get started right off the bat and drive through the business. A, I had zero interest in doing the business.

Andrea Ryan:
In fact, it was like another MLM. I didn't want any part I'm doing it. And B my first order was lavender and tear shield. That was it. And I didn't get another order for another two or three months afterwards once like the kit you're like, you know, the book that used to come, I don't know. I mean, I guess it does still come, but it was just, it was nothing but the oils and I thought, oh, these are really cute. And I just started ordering oils. And so, you know, you just never give up on those people who are the small first time investments and who do not wanna do the business in the beginning, for sure.

Hayley Hobson:
And like, what are some stories now from some of those people? Like, I know you're saying that that's what you were, but like, do you have any of those stories yourself where, because I have an incredible story myself. Like I remember this was probably seven years ago or more seven and a half years ago when I was at, I was already blue diamond myself and I was at, yeah, I was in, I wanna say I was in Santa Barbara and I was at a, the retreat in the beginning of the year. And I got this email from a woman named Tara bliss. And she said to me that she was interested in getting a bottle of a Regno and she had been skiing and, or snowboarding in Japan. And I just loved the way that she wrote her email to me. And so, and I also noticed that she was from Australia.

Hayley Hobson:
So I went and looked her up. I looked up her website and I, I was like hitting my husband, like, wow, look at this woman. She's phenomenal. She was probably like 27 years old at the time. Anyway, long story short, she ended up buying a home essentials kit within the, within a day or two and then returning it and getting a diamond kit and then a presidential diamond in doTERRA. And it's just like, you know, you just never know who's gonna cross your path and if you are present and in communication and in relationship building, like I'm gonna just call it magic. That happens. Yeah.

Andrea Ryan:
Yeah. It it's, it's that intangible energy that runs through this business that I, you know, I don't, I can't even, well, I can't put my finger on it cuz it is intangible, but it is. It's just that there's something that draws people in when they not only see the products and understand it, but it's a different type of person as well. Like yes, of course there's that business opportunity that we all love and want to you know, maximize on and, and, and really dive into. But when you couple that with such incredible products that just offer so many different solutions and so many different ways to use it. Yeah, I mean, I can't think of any specific in the last little bit where I've had people, but what I will say is that I've got people now suddenly coming out of the woodwork again, after two years of quite frankly, it being very quiet and people wanting to come back into this and understand more about it or people that were never in doTERRA and want to know more about these oils.

Andrea Ryan:
You know, it's, I was on a flight to national, I don't know, a few months ago and was chatting with a woman next to me. She's a pediatric ICU nurse in up in Boston area. There's a big pediatric hospital up there. She had no idea what doTERRA was. She had no idea what essential oils were . I was like, well, let me tell you  and, and you know what struck up this conversation. So it's yeah, there is just something about it. That's magical that lets us come into it, which is nice.

Hayley Hobson:
So when did it occur to you that like that magic could actually become a lifestyle that was a financial, that could become a financial reward for you and your family as well?

Andrea Ryan:
It was probably a year into it. So we, I had purchased in, I, I started in June or yeah, it was June of 2014. It wasn't until almost eight months later that I was actually looking at at, as a business opportunity. And then, because I needed continuing education, I went to the first my first convention in salt lake and was blown away because I've been to a bazillion chiropractic seminars. They all start late, they're all disorganized. It's always a disaster. And I got there and they're like, be on time. I'm like, sure, sure. And we sat up in the nose bleeds. And I just remember looking down and seeing all, I'm sure you were there, the presidential diamond sitting in those really spiky chairs. And I just thought I'm gonna be there. Like that's, that's what I want. And there was just something that lit up inside of me.

Andrea Ryan:
There were incredible speakers that grace, the stage, they were on time, they were organized, everything was so beautifully done. And I thought, that's it. This is I'm gonna sit down there one day. I haven't made the presidential seats yet. I will one day. But it's, there was just something that completely lit me up. And I think honestly it was because it was the first time ever I was going to build something that was truly mine. My practice had been alongside my husband and not that we, I didn't love my practice. I mean, it was a huge component of my life for a number of years, but this was all mine I could do with it. What I wanted, I could create what I wanted and partnering with women primarily. I, right now, currently we don't have any men on our team where there are a couple of people coming in, but primarily women, there's just something about that. That's that's special. So yeah, that's what, that's what it was.

Hayley Hobson:
That's amazing. So what are you committed to creating now? Like what is now that you have gone on this journey and you've created a business, you looked at the people in the seats in front of you were like, I know I can do that too. And now you are, you're there. You're sitting in that front section, you're earning a, an income that's probably higher than the majority of everybody, but 1%, right. What, what are you committed? What are you commit committed to creating right now, either within your team, in the world out there? That's not that hasn't caught the vision yet. Like what do you think?

Andrea Ryan:
Yeah. lots of things. I think I'm more excited now about the future than I ever have been for a few reasons. One, so our team has had its struggles and I think we're, it's fair to say that there have been a few teams that have had struggles and we're up in Canada and Canada's taken a bit of a blow in the last little bit. But I'm even more committed to helping those who are still, I mean, we still have incredible people that show up on our team calls every week that I do strategy calls with every week. And I want success for them as much as I want it for me. And my upline is Zix and she told me that one day she's like, you'll know, you'll reach that certain level. I was probably gold at the time.

Andrea Ryan:
And she's like, you're just gonna hit that point where you want it for them as much as you want it for yourself. And I'm there, which I think is amazing. I don't want this to be you know, just my vision or my experience and journey. I want it to be that everyone's getting the success or level of success that they want. So I'm more committed to my team, I think, than I ever have been in the past. I'm created to, or committed to getting a much more diverse community and a deeper community so that people are more deeply attached to their oils versus it being the superficial. And I don't mean this in a bad way, but like lemon is good for cleansing on guard. Good for immune. Like I just, there's so much more to the oils and I just refuse to keep it at surface level.

Andrea Ryan:
And that, I think where I, what I've really loved or what's really sort of prompted me in the last little bit is expanding it to how do we use these oils and so out many other ways as well. So I've created I'm in the process of creating a course that I'll, you know, launch for the first time, which is exciting, cuz it's new for me. We're building out teams in India right now. So there's just like all of these next pieces to it that still come full circle where I can continue to serve my community. But take my knowledge as a healthcare provider and everything I've, you know, accumulated over the last few years in doTERRA and, and put it to good in other means. So it's sort of like just little containers that I get to continue to share the message and continue to build and thrive on, which is fine.

Hayley Hobson:
What does that feel like to like literally open up in new markets and doTERRA or just the idea of what you've created to a completely different place than, and world than you're living in

Andrea Ryan:
It's it's, it's exciting. It's sort of 80% exciting, 20%. What am I doing? Because I haven't been to India, I've never been to India. I went to Nepal with doTERRA a couple or I guess three or four years ago now. But God like India is exciting. The people I'm connecting with there. So this is where I find it. Interesting. And because I don't have any direct connections in India, I have my massage therapist here is from India. So she is sort of what prompted me to get involved in that. Toby Jarou, who's a blue diamond up in Alaska. She had also suggested I get started cuz she's really leading the charge there. It's hard when it's, it's not actually let me take that back. It's not hard. It's just a commitment to figuring out how to do it because it's so easy to say, well, I don't live there, so I'm not gonna do anything.

Andrea Ryan:
And am I allowed to swear? Like, I'm just gonna say, I'm gonna CU bull if I'm allowed to swear  cause shit on it because you just figure it out. Like I learned how to use LinkedIn and it has exposed everything like been opened me up to an entirely new market there of people who are very business to business oriented on LinkedIn. I've met I think three out of the four builders that I'm or leaders that I'm working on to get there. They're gonna be it's June 1st now. So they'll be opening up accounts in the next couple of days. You know, and then you just, you do zoom calls and you, you just figure it out. It's sort of like that, build it. And they will come mentality. The first two months of classes that I taught online, even though I advertise them, I had zero people show up, but I showed up every single week, even though I had no contact there and just kept marketing it and week eventually about, I think it was on week seven.

Andrea Ryan:
I finally had people attend my classes and I was like, oh my gosh, there are people in my class.  so, and it's just, I'm committed to it. So it's, you know, to just say, oh, I don't live there. So I'm, if it's something that's niggling at you to say, yes, I wanna do it. Then just figure out a way to do it and start working every angle and learn new skills and you know, run with it because my God, like there's a 1.4 billion people in India right now of which only, I think what 4,000 people have accounts. So that's a pretty big market to be able to take advantage of at the moment.

Hayley Hobson:
That's amazing. I love that. Such an opportunity. So cut couple questions for you. Do you, do you build completely person to person or are you building online at all?

Andrea Ryan:
Both. I would say Canada was under pretty strict lockdowns rolling lockdowns and so on. So for the last two years I built person to person up until pretty much like maybe a few months before COVID hit only because I don't know. I guess I had stopped being in the practice, but being in my practice, that was a pretty consistent way to introduce people to the oils. And then once COVID hit, we pretty much had to go fully on line up here. That was just, it was hard up here to build in Canada if, if you were only person to person. So, you know, it's that whole P word of pivoting figuring it out, implementing it. So right now it's 50 50. I'm going back to teaching classes. I love teaching classes. It's been, I don't know, well, two and a bit years since I started and it's been now four months of teaching and people are loving it. So I would say it's probably maybe a 60, 40 mix, 60% still online, 40% in person.

Hayley Hobson:
What, what does online look like to you? Like what kind of online or digital strategies are you employing right now? And what does in person mean to you? I'd love for you to share like give real time. I know that a lot of us talk about like, oh, this is so exciting and yes, this is great and everybody, you know, should be doing this. And like if somebody were to walk away, could you give them like your best tip on how to relate to people in person and bring new people into the business either in person and or digitally?

Andrea Ryan:
Yeah. So in person, I would say the big, so I've been working strategically around a few different areas. Is that personally just getting back out in front of people? There's a couple of like shows, I guess you call them or whatever, where I had a booth, this is the first time I've done a booth and I don't know how long and I used to hate booths, but I'm like, I need to get out in front of people again because you know, everything I used to do in person just sort of is a little bit slow to get back up and starting again. So I just took a bunch of leaps in the last couple of months and said, I'm gonna, first of all, do classes as many as I can. I'm fortunate because I have my husband's practice. So I was able to use that as a space.

Andrea Ryan:
But I've taught them outta my house as well. And I just keep inviting people. So I do say that I will talk to neighbors. We've had connections back at things like even the park, but often they come through virtual connections. So Instagram is where I use it. There I am very, I mean, I just have fun with Instagram. I look at it as fun personally. So it's not something that I any, you know, not good, necessarily good at it, but I'm getting about one or two new customers a month just strictly from, from Instagram, but reaching out to people face or not face to face, but individually. So instead of just putting something out there, I've personally gone out, connected in with people, reached out to, I love working with healthcare professionals. And so I've been personally reaching out to the ones I personally know, and then asking for referrals that's been a big issue or not a big issue and a big boost to my business is asking for the referrals in a good way.

Andrea Ryan:
It doesn't look like a sleazy thing, but actually building the relationship and then asking for the referral. And then honestly, LinkedIn, I have to go back to that. I at least six new sharers and or potential builders, three of which have already started three of which are about to start within the next month. Linkedin's been tremendous because it is that business to business concept. So that's more of the virtual thing. And most people look at LinkedIn as boring and perhaps it is, but I I'll, I've got six new business builders and shares coming on. I'm that's, that's worth my time for sure. So understanding how to use that effectively, I would say is a huge component of it.

Hayley Hobson:
So how do you, how do you do use link LinkedIn? Like LinkedIn is a little bit, like you said, like most people think of it boring, like as boring. I wouldn't, I would've never used the word boring. I would've used the word like for me, like I hate using this word cause I'm so not a person who ever like decides I can't do anything. I mean, I can figure out anything, but like almost like overwhelming, like mm-hmm  with Instagram and Facebook and TikTok and, and channels like that. I've chosen those just because I can like highlight my personality with I'm. I, I love showing up on video. Like that's my strength is showing up on video and showing up on camera and showing up with inflection in my voice and sharing that kind of personality that I have that brings people in and it enrolls them in my life. Right. Which then enrolls them in the product, the company, the business, and LinkedIn I've always felt as a little bit more let's call it sterile. Mm-Hmm  like you just can't I just can't I can't see somebody's heart in LinkedIn. Do you know what I mean? So I don't, I wouldn't look at it. Maybe it is, maybe that is boring then, but it's also like, like, okay, like how do you like find the right person and see that there's a fit energetically through LinkedIn

Andrea Ryan:
It's well, see, that's the thing I had to completely, so I don't do TikTok. I don't do Facebook I'm so I'm either on Instagram or LinkedIn and I have to literally shut my link my Instagram brain off and go into LinkedIn brain, which is business business business. Which truthfully, I love talking about the doTERRA business because it does rock. We have an ingenious compensation plan. Like I think it's amazing. So for me, I approach LinkedIn as not I'm a doTERRA distributor, cuz that sounds really boring, but I teach them about residual income and the power of residual income and how to connect in with people that way. And then I have, so I sort of have that bucket, let's say in terms of residual income, I talk a little bit about the doTERRA as a company in terms of the heart of the company and understanding a little bit about co impact sourcing, but that might be once every three weeks that I drop one of those in.

Andrea Ryan:
I've also the big thing is that I maximized my profile to highlight the business of what doTERRA offers. So residual incoming expert, looking back a little bit on my history, I'm here to attract, I know what my niche is on LinkedIn in terms of healthcare providers. And then I've got builders in India as well, which might flip into a little bit with entrepreneurs and yes, healthcare providers, but people who are influencers over there. And so I just am very clear with those buckets and that's what I stick to. It's not someplace that I talk about my kids. I don't talk about my dog. I don't talk about the walk I went on this morning. That's not what it's there for. I'm there to only strictly approach people with regards to the business. What's interesting is that you will attract people very different than you differently than you would on other social media streams for that same reason, because it's not about necessarily your personality, although that comes over afterwards.

Andrea Ryan:
You know, I've got a new potential builder in Florida that's showing up or that's we're connecting back and forth going back and forth right now and he's in finance, right? So he, or in the past in finance. So he is, but he sees the benefit because he has a, a connection of chiropractors that he's worked for in the past, never in a million years, would that have been my ideal builder, but you know, I'm not gonna shut that down for the sake of he's interested in the, the, the process of it or the possibility of it. So it's just a very different approach of looking at it. And I think with the way network market is and changing and evolving, we still get to put our own spin and flare into it. But I think we also need to be open to all the different opportunities that are out there.

Hayley Hobson:
Yeah. I love it. I love it. So good. So just switching gears for a second, cuz I know that no matter where we are in our life, like things are like are happening in our world. Like it could be something like we have in our brain, like too many things going on that we have to do. I'm saying that with like air hashtags, right. Or we've got legit. Like my parents got COVID last week. Both of them they're in Florida or I got run down last week. I had like, I was in a training room for several days in a row within insane hours. And I was coming down with something. It could be that we, we're not creating enough space for our spouse and therefore there's tension or miscommunication that happens. It could be that you, you have a month where your sales aren't as great as they normally are. It could be that one of your own builders quits, I mean, there's just a zillion things that happen in our daily world. It could be that somebody gives you the finger while you're in traffic. I don't know what keeps you going when you have thoughts that are like, I'm not having a good day.

Andrea Ryan:
Oh yeah. And that happens a lot, right. As you said, there's not a day that goes by that I don't get sidetracked or well, you know, you and I were talking just before we got on, sometimes you have the, you know, if your notifications are still on and I can be having a conversation and if out of the corner of my ISC notification from someone and I'm thinking, oh man, I know that's not gonna be,  be a good thing. So I mean, one, I reach for my oils and I'm not saying that because I'm trying to be cliche or appealed to people in doTERRA. I legit do reach for my oils. And I've learned to manage my thoughts much better than I used to. So whereas if I used to get some type of bad news or something that derailed me, we all had, COVID rolling COVID in our home for, I think it was like three and a half weeks.

Andrea Ryan:
It just seemed to get one person and then they'd get better. And then the next person that it was like three and a half, which is a long time when you've got people home and then you yourself were sick and so on. And I wasn't very productive those three weeks, but when I get back to get me back on track, I just go back to, I think I know this sounds so cliche, cuz we talk about it all the time, but my why, and like I know exactly what I'm working towards and I'm so crystal clear with the vision for the life that I wanna have that even if it's not necessarily like it could be the courses, it could be doTERRA. It could be helping my husband with something from his practice because that needs to get handled. Everything comes back to why I am doing this.

Andrea Ryan:
And if I've ever feeling like so F car blah, sorry. So far off course. You know, it just takes me that moment to say, Hey, this is what you're working towards. And if we don't get back on this, I have that feeling responsibility is very high, I guess, in my strengths. And I do. I just feel that deep responsibility for making sure that I'm contributing to and creating what we envision for ourselves within the next few years. If I can take 30 seconds here, we personally have been working toward last year. We were supposed to be in Europe for the year, taking our kids outta school, traveling around Europe. COVID threw that off of course. And so we you know, looked at a second option this year and now, you know, we've just sold our house up here. You can maybe not tell, cause I've, preed up the background in my office, but everything's in boxes and we sell we're, we're closing in 29 days now and we're gonna move up to our cottage for two months and then we're gonna go travel the states for eight months.

Andrea Ryan:
And you know, that was like, I get teary eyed and emotional. When I think about going back six years, coming back from a trip we were driving back from Vermont, we'd taking the kids skiing there and we were heading into the sunset and I just had this visceral reaction that was like, I need more of this. This is what I want for my family. And we worked our butts off for six years through chiropractic Tru doTERRA through everything we do in order to drive the income in so that we could be at a place where at you know, 44 and 46, we have the ability to step back and create that reality for ourselves. And there were a lot of crappy days. There were a lot of builders lost. There was, but I just looked at it and said, Hey, this is, this is what I'm creating. And if I'm going to continue to create it, we're gonna make this reality. Then I gotta, I gotta get back to work and do my thing because it just meant that

Hayley Hobson:
Much you get to get back to work and do your thing. That is what you get to do. It's what's given to you. It's your gift. Yes. All right. So before we go in, I wanna thank you for so much of your time here. I wanna just share, I want everybody to be able to figure out how to get in touch with you. If they wanna reach out to you afterwards, I've got a little gift that I have created for anybody who's on the podcast, listening a little oils book, it's called all about all about essential oils, ebook, all about essential oils, ebook, and what you'll learn.
