Intro:
Welcome to doTERRA Diamonds Discuss where you'll be inspired by stories, tips, and strategies by doTERRA's top leaders who will then help you turn your passion for holistic wellness into your own profitable and flexible business. And now here's your host Double Presidential Diamond, Hayley Hobson.

Hayley Hobson:
All right. Hello, my friends. Welcome to doTERRA Diamonds Discuss where we teach entrepreneurs with a passion for holistic wellness, how to make a six figure income or more so that they can work from home. Have the flexibility they've been craving with their time and make more money than they've ever imagined. So we are back with another episode. I can't wait for you to meet our guest today, Melody Layton. I just know that you'll find Melody's story super motivational. So she had a desire to create time freedom in her life, which most of us want. And it was really important to her when she found herself a single mom with four kids and that vision that she had of time freedom and flexibility became a reality for her, with doTERRA as the vehicle. And now she's a blue diamond in the company and being her own boss has enabled her to structure her life around her kids' schedules. And not only that, it created a way for her to become completely self sustainable with her income. So I'm excited to get started with her today. Welcome Melody.

Melody Layton:
Yes. Thank you so much for having me. I'm excited to, to share my story and my, my love for this company and all that it's provided.

Hayley Hobson:
I'm so glad you're here too. Thank you for coming. So why don't you just start with that, just share a little bit about yourself, a little bit about your bio, your history, like how you got here, what your journeys looked like.

Melody Layton:
Yeah, definitely. I started 10 years ago and basically as a stay-at-home mom at the time with four little ones, they were 2, 4, 6 and eight at the time.  and I always was more interested in natural wellness, not totally a hundred percent natural, but if I could try something natural, you know, for my, for our family's health, I was gonna, you know, I was interested in that first before I went to the medication. And so I, when I was introduced to doTERRA, my girlfriend you know, knew my, my concern for a health issue that all of my kids were having seasonally and in the winters and introduced, you know, she had just gone to an essential oil class and she was like, Melody, you have to try these, you know, I know exactly what you need, you need on guard and breathe. And so I ordered those two bottles from her and saw a huge improvement in my kids' health within a few days, and just felt very empowered as a mom, that I had something that was natural and effective for them.

Melody Layton:
And I had, you know, plenty of it  left over to use in the future. And then I was just like, okay, what else is there? And got real excited to get my little, you know, kit of 10 oils that I would feel, you know, that I had something in my home that I could go to as quickly as possible, you know, for all the random issues, obviously that come up with everyday health concerns with her kids. So just really felt empowered as a mom. And then my, my girlfriend Brandy told me, you know, after we both had gotten our kits and, you know, started getting to know the oils a little bit more, she was like, you know, you can do this as a business. I'm gonna do this as a business. I'm real excited about being also, she was a stay at home mom of four.

Melody Layton:
We can create an income for our families that we both need right now. I know you're struggling and we're struggling and we can do this together. We get to, even though she lived in Hawaii and I'm here in Southern California, she's like, you know, we can do, I can come over there and we can do things together. Or, you know, we can, you know, create this extra stream of income that we both, you know, need so desperately. And so I, she was so passionate, just like she was about the oils about the business side that I got, you know, I was like, okay, let's do it. And so, you know, with her, I was able to, you know, continue to learn more not knowing much about this type of this income opportunity or even essential oils, really. I learned them both along the way.

Melody Layton:
And you know, it was very rewarding. I always wanted to go into nursing, but because I had, you know, got married and had my son right in the middle of my nursing schooling, I had to opt out cause I didn't have anyone to watch him. And so this really filled that for me, that need to help people in the healthcare industry. But yet I was also able to do it from a natural standpoint, which made me feel, you know, really, really good about, you know, taking it from the natural, the natural way and giving them those solutions naturally and, and seeing, seeing it work so right. I've just been in it from the beginning, you know, like as far as just so thankful for this, the essential oils and then obviously all the other products that I started to learn about and then also the opportunity to help other people.

Melody Layton:
And one of the things that I realized I wasn't doing right away was talking about the business side of it. And I felt kind of weird about that, just because I guess I maybe hadn't had the success yet that I could you know, be confident about. But as I saw my rank, obviously still growing and my income growing and I got to the gold rank, I actually felt bad about all the times. I didn't tell people about the business opportunity because I saw the money coming in consistently, and now I'm making as much as I would've as a nurse, but I'm able to be a stay at home mom and still make my own schedule. And and I thought, wow, how many people did I not tell that there was a business side to this? And they could have also been blessed financially, like I'm, you know, now being blessed.

Melody Layton:
And so my whole mindset changed at that point and I was able to focus more, you know, also talk about the business opportunity and invite people to join me on the business side as well. And that same year this was about two years in with doTERRA. I found myself going through a divorce and it was just evident, you know, through marriage counseling and all the, all the things that we were gonna be separating and I was gonna have to get my own house. And so and I did that for a peaceful, you know, separation. I, you know, just really focused on creating that six figure income that I needed to live in orange county, California and still, you know, live in a decent community that was safe and, and near my kids' school and all of that. And so I, I always said I would hit, I would, I didn't, I was gonna skip platinum.

Melody Layton:
So I was gold and I was gonna skip platinum because I needed a diamond, you know, income to, to have, to be able to take care of my kids and have 50% custody. And I wasn't gonna be getting any child support or alimony. And so I literally on, on Halloween night of 2014, I put in one order and enrolled one other person and refreshed my back office. And I saw it go from gold to diamond. And I actually literally skipped platinum.  never saw it on my back office. So that was really fun that I actually kept saying, I'm skipping platinum. And I did so from then on, you know, within a few months I was renting my own home and, and it was just so awesome to be able to when my kids and I'm picking up my kids on my days from school to be there, to be the one that picked them up and you know, to not have the conflict of the financial situation with a divorce. So I couldn't imagine my life without doTERRA without the oils, obviously I've, you know, still very natural minded and even more so than I was when I began, because I just see how effective these essential oils are, especially if we can catch them, you know, at the beginning of a, the, you know, onset of something. And so I'm just, it's so fulfilling to be able to offer both now, you know, the financial opportunity and the, the natural solutions to people.

Hayley Hobson:
I love that. And I'm so sorry about like all of that added pressure and, you know, that's gotta be super stressful to be put in a position where you don't have that extra layer of support that a lot of people have with a partner. And just, but I also acknowledge you in standing in responsibility, you know, it is a big feat to just claim your own power and to just acknowledge that you, that if it's up, if it's meant to be it's up to me,

Melody Layton:
Right. Definitely. Yeah.

Hayley Hobson:
And, and,

Melody Layton:
You know, and I could've legally gotten child supporter or alimony if I was making less, but that would've caused a fight. You know, we would've been arguing over how much. And so I could have gotten that from him, but I just knew if I could just match his income  and we could go our separate ways, it would be more peaceful and that was best for the kids. And so that's what I did. , you know, and I love that about doTERRA, that you have a blueprint, you need to be making this much money. This is what you, this is where you need to get to, you know, and, and we know how to get there. You know, we have to take action and we have to, to do the things, but it's there for us, you know, if we need it, it's, it's not like a, you know, like a stock or a, you know, a new Bitcoin thing that you might get your money back in time. You know, like it's a, if you do these things and you bring in this type of volume, you will get paid this, you know? Yeah. From doTERRA, it's, it's very reliable and, and I'm super thankful for it. And, and I, yeah, I just wanted peace and I knew that was the way to go.

Hayley Hobson:
Yeah. Well, I mean, the reason I'm sharing this with you is because I get it, like I get what that's like to, I get it from so many perspectives. I mean, one, the perspective is that I'm in it and that I'm creating myself and I'm committed to creating my own joy, my own happiness, my own, my own future, my, the life for my children, for my family. But I also see the disconnect when other people are not willing to commit to that. And they go into a place of blame and they go into a place of judgment. They go into a place of fear. They go into a place of self worthlessness and you know, who am I to take on this responsibility? Or, you know, let me just see if something better happens to me. So I don't have to step up. So, you know, this was not the direction I was gonna go in the interview with you today, but I just wanna acknowledge you for just, just owning, like owning it, because it's a big deal.

Hayley Hobson:
And for those of you who are sitting here listening, and you're like, not sure whether you can step into your own power, you're not sure whether you can take your business next level or even maintain your business where it is right now, or start a business. If you're new, the answer I have for you is if it's meant to be it's up to me and you get to do it. And Melody is just such a perfect example of someone who could have played victim, because that's the, that's the place we all would love to go. , let's just see how many other people we can blame and just step back and see if somebody else will own it. So good on you.

Melody Layton:
Mm-Hmm  thank you so much. Yeah. Yeah. I just, you know, I'm and even looking back, you know, during that hard time, I'm actually thankful for it because it pushed me up, you know? Yeah. Like I had to rise up. I had to create the income that I needed and that's where I'm, you know, where I'm at today at the very beginning, you know, I'll, I'll be honest. You know, Brandy was really driven. She, you know, wanted to hit diamond in a year and she did. And so I, you know, I, I was right there with her televising classes and enrolling people. We both won the crews with our own personal enrollments that first year together, which was really fun. And but I, you know, without that, without her also being as, as goal oriented and even more so than I was at the time, I don't know if I'd be where I am today. And if I didn't go through that divorce, I don't know where I'd be today. You know? So things that you might, you know, look back and be like, oh, that was rough, you know, to go through it actually created a strong, you know, woman. And now that I can, I look at that, I'm like, I could, I did that. I can totally do that. You know?

Hayley Hobson:
Yeah, no, I acknowledge you. I acknowledge you. So share with us. So let's just go back to the beginning for a second. And you know, what was it like for you? Like when did you occur that you could do, when did it occur to you that you could do Tara as a business? What did that, what did it look for you in the beginning? Like what were some of the hard things then that you decided to do in order to get it up and running? Because I here's, here's what I, here's my perception of humans right now. And I, this is gonna sound like super judgemental and look, I mean, if it does, like, I'm just gonna apologize in advance if it's landing, although I will say if it's landing for you, then maybe there's something there  . But my perception of people right now is that there, there they're, they're, they're not committed. Mm-Hmm, , they're lazy. They aren't willing to step up and do what has to be done. And when I started my business, I wasn't lucky I was committed Afaf mm-hmm

Melody Layton:

Hayley Hobson:
And I worked my frigging ass off at the consequence of relationships at the time, which yes, I did get to repair a bunch of those and some not, and clean up after I reached the point that I wanted to get to. But was it worth it? Yes. Every minute of it. And even though there was time away from family and time away from husband and time away from kids and time away from this, I will tell you no one in my family regrets, what I did, no one in my family regrets, what I did. And again, my perception of people, my experience, this is my experience. Not a fact, it's not a judgment. It's just an experience. My experience of people is that they're weak right now. Mm-Hmm  and they're not willing to step into their power. Like you have, and frigging do what it takes to create something intentional for them and their family. So share with us, well, you can respond if you want and then share with us what were the things?

Melody Layton:
Yeah. I think, you know, people were just so surrounded by other people that are in the victim mentality. I think they kind of, you know, don't even realize that they're, that they're CRE they're taking on that mindset as well, you know, but I hear you it's it's, you know, it's it's and on the other side of it in a place of, you know, a six figure income, I'm just like, but if you just focus on this, you could, and it's a choice what you need to focus on right now. I know you're saying, you're going through this, you're going through that. And you can't do this right now, but if you would just focus on this a little bit more, you would see the reward and it would be the financial freedom that will bless you. And you won't even that, that thing that you're going through right now won't even be an issue anymore because, you know, and also thought, you know, focusing on joy and I know so many, you know, that I've worked with, you know, we still have, you know, good relationships and things like that, but they actually do enjoy helping people, you know, with their health issues.

Melody Layton:
They enjoy it. It's not, you know, that it's something that they're, they're just like putting on the back burner, cuz I don't like doing it. It's just these other fires in front of them right now that they're having to put out. But if we can focus on joy and that's what I'm trying to get to even focus on right now with my team and creating more events and community and just serve, you know, I've even doing some things volunteer where if I found myself very stagnant and I volunteered to babysit a couple my sister's clients' kids for free so that they could go get their hair done, you know, and just do that. Cause I enjoy babies and I have, you know, 12 and 12 to 19. So I, I missed that stage and I'm like, just let me, you know, and I've actually gotten connections with enrollments because of it.

Melody Layton:
Not that wasn't why I did it, but I'm putting myself out there in other ways to create connections with people. And because I'm doing it with an active service, they're like, what do you do full time that you have time to do this? And they're more interested in what I'm doing and the oils and things like that. So you know, in the very beginning, you know, I was in a desperate situation for financial, you know, I wasn't bringing in income myself and we needed it. And we had bought a house recently for our first house and my ex-husband's plumbing business at the time had slowed down. And so he, we actually had enough money to pay the mortgage, but not for groceries and gas and things like that. We were putting things on credit cards. So I was like, what can I do?

Melody Layton:
You know? And I actually didn't even sign up with doTERRA because I saw that as a financial freedom. I didn't know. I didn't really see that as an option for me at first I just was listening to my girlfriend, talk about oils on the phone. And so but the timing of it was perfect. I asked God to send me something and now, you know, that's when Brandy told me about oils for my kids' health and it was, I didn't see it as a business opportunity, but I signed up anyway. And then as soon as I saw that, how effective they were and how much I was using them, I knew other moms would want them. Like I just knew it, you know, and I was gonna help them in a way with naturally that they were looking for. And if they decided to join me as a business as well, that was another, you know, something I could help them with as well.

Melody Layton:
So it just felt, it really wasn't even a question for me to do it as a business. So I would say you asked how soon you know, within a month or two, I was, you know, booking a class, Kirsten KBA taught my very first class. My upline was outta state. So I know there's an excuse there with people where they're upline, they maybe not be local. And mine was, you know, across the ocean and then the other upline was in Utah. So we conquered, you know, I dealt with that and and did a lot of things on my own as well and, and got through it. So I don't know, it's just a super rewarding to me to just focus on serving others and you know, I'm just wanting to attract people on that same frequency of, you know, wanting to give more and receive more right now. So,

Hayley Hobson:
And, and what do you, what do you do to attract people right now? Are you building a business online or are you working in a local area? Like what are some of the strategies you use right now?

Melody Layton:
Yeah, so I actually, in the last two years I felt, you know, I hit blue diamond in April of 2020 . As I'm sure a lot of people, you know, ranked up that month, cuz it was an amazing month and then things just kind of started to shake down and shake down and shake down. And I know for me personally, I was doing things on zoom and posting them on a event bright and you know, trying to do it online, cuz that was our only choice at the time. And I don't feel like I'm great online.  I'm not this, you know I'm not big into social media. Like I have an account obviously and I post things sporadically. But it's just not where I feel the joy, you know? And so I kind of saw things shake down and shake down a little bit more.

Melody Layton:
So now just in the last few months I'm doing events again and I'm really excited about that. I have spas locally here. I'm doing more business approach I guess, than, you know, the than hitting up my friends because one, most of my friends already are enrolled and are using the oils, which is awesome. And so I've gone through my warm market and and so I'm really pitching it more of, you know, a business opportunity with massage therapists, aestheticians. I have a float therapy spa that's using essential oils, offering them, you know, for the people to use before their float meditation. And then we're now inviting her clients to a sound bath at a different location for her to get to know them a little bit more for us to talk about oils there. And before we do a sound bath type event, which obviously works hand in hand with her float therapy clients and then again with two other spas, so, and offering classes in there and then I'm having my team members talk, you know, in their area go into going into yoga studios or offering a to aroma touch to massage therapist.

Melody Layton:
Aroma touch was huge. I'll just say that for my business, from the beginning, I love it. It's such a great way to give an essential oil experience. It's how I got my two largest legs interested in doTERRA as a company and looking at more as a business when they received an wrong touch from me. So I'm going back to that now that we have the online certification course and you know, offering it more, you know, like businesses like massage therapists and things like that.

Hayley Hobson:
Yeah, no, I mean just like, it's amazing. It's like, there's just so many op this is that this is what I wanna remark is like, there's so many ways like there's so many excuses people use and there's still so many different ways to connect. So I hope you guys heard that all the different opportunities that are still out there and it's about like, first of all, believing that you, what I hear from you and I'm put words in your mouth you can share is what I hear from Melody is, is number one, she's got massive belief in the product. Number two. I, I, what I hear from Melody, she's got massive belief in the compensation plan and what it can do for herself and her family. She's got massive belief in what the company can actually give to other people, other humans and therefore sharing the product.

Hayley Hobson:
And the opportunity is not a problem for her at all. If you're not a hundred percent aligned in that belief in yourself, then it doesn't matter how much you believe in the product or the compensation plan or the company. So there's also massive belief in Melanie believes in herself mm-hmm  and it's like one little win that you have Melanie or one little win that somebody else has reinstates, reignites that belief. So you give yourself evidence that you're capable of something you share oils with somebody who's interested. They say yes. And then it's like, you know, this like spiral effect or domino effect and the belief continues to build. So for all of you who are out there who are going like, oh my gosh, I don't know who to talk to. There's nobody in front of me. Well, first of all, that's a lie that you're telling yourself  right. And a story and a reason that you're giving us and we don't believe it. So you can fill up that BS cup to somebody else. And there is, I hope that you realize just from all the episodes that are here on the podcast, that there is real opportunity out there and we are no different than you

Melody Layton:
Mm-Hmm

Hayley Hobson:
We are just more committed. We are more connected and being committed and connected is a choice. It's not a skill, it's a choice. It's a way of being and you get to show up like that if you want to. So is there anything else that you would like to share Melody?

Melody Layton:
I think, you know, also just the, you know, that mindset of belief and staying committed, you kind of, you have to keep feeding it, you know, like with surrounding yourself with, you know, what other, obviously we all have time in the day to do other things, besides our, do the business or our nine to five job, we have a few more hours, right? And so during that time, you know, listening to, you know, podcasts like this that are going to just feed you with inspiration or hearing success stories that really does help tomorrow when you're in a difficult situation and you're uncomfortable and you're not sure if you should call that person or, you know, offer, you know, go into that business and offer essential oils. You know, you'll think about that podcast you listened to yesterday or the book that you're reading on mindset, or, you know, getting on that weekly team call with whatever, as far up in your upline, as you need to get to, to get, to feed yourself once a week and to get to local events and to get to convention.

Melody Layton:
And, you know, I've always, I will say I've been consistent with those things as well. You know, finding a local networking women's group in your area and they're gonna be in different MLMs or whatever, but even if you're not signing them up, you're surround yourself by goal driven women, you know, doing those type of things will help you get out of the slump or feeling that those negative things that you tell yourself and that you can't do this, or you don't have time right now. Ignore those things and just feed yourself good, you know, with good situations. Good, good information, you know, and don't just try to push all that other stuff away and cuz you, you are capable. This is an amazing opportunity. It is totally worth your focus. And yeah, just, just keep on track.

Hayley Hobson:
Absolutely. All right. Well I just really wanna let you know how much I appreciate you being here and just remind everybody that there are opportunities out for you. I wanna, I wanna have a way I wanna share a way for people to connect with you. So if you could share your, whether you're on Facebook or Instagram or website, for those of you out there, you know, you can always find me hayleyhobson.com. I'm @hayleyhobson  on Instagram. I'm I am Hayley Hobson on TikTok I'm Hayley Hobson hole you on Facebook. And because I was so inspired by Melody's story, I actually created a little blend for this episode. It's a courage blend and you can download it. All of you guys can download it. Hayley hobson.com/courage blend. That's literally it it's my blend. My go to that. I've created when I feel like I wanna step up and be in courage, cuz again, it's a way of being Hayley hobson.com/courage, blend Melody. How can people get in touch with you?

Melody Layton:
Yeah, so I am just in the last year or two, I've kind of created my own new brand applied for my just personal name. I recently got married the last year, new year's Eve 2020. And so you know, I have the, my last name is Melody Layton, which is where I am on Facebook. But a Melody of wellness is, is my new Instagram account. So you won't see a whole lot of content there. I'm working on adding that, but you can definitely be in me there at a Melody of wellness, my personal Instagram is this mellow mama life. So that's where I do more my personal, but I've been doing doTERRA there both. And so a Melody of wellness on Instagram is where you know, I put, I'm creating more of just a business page and then a event bright if you're local in Southern California or you're looking for maybe a zoom here and there it's on event bright, you'll find me forward slash a Melody of wellness.

Hayley Hobson:
