We've got a crazy special episode today. And I have got one of the best metabolic health doctors in the world joining me today. How you got to where you are today. We had such a great conversation on clubhouse a couple weeks ago and you were sharing your courier in medicine and then your current position as CMO at doTERRA can you can you share some of that with us.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Yeah, it's kind of an interesting story. Everybody's always interested in how I came to doTERRA. So um I worked for a very large medical system in the inner mountain west and was a medical director for them for a long time. Um I'm a pediatrician by training and a pediatric infectious disease doc. By subspecialty training and as a result built a large group of subspecialists which is turning into a large children's hospital and they asked me to lead that hospital and cultivate donors and I had some friends at doTERRA and they invited me over and listened to what we were doing and. As a result of me recruiting them to donate to build a children's hospital where we were um where I was living. Um they they recruited me to join them and it was kind of a fun conversation with Dave Sterling who was one of the founding executives of doTERRA. He said to me Russ it's. Just amazing work which you've been doing here for the last Decade bringing a children's hospital to this part of the state would be just amazing. You're going to help hundreds of thousands of children. You could do that. For the rest of your career and be really happy or you could come to doTERRA and do it for millions. It's really up to you and and that really struck me. You know that I could I could have influence on the health of millions of people across the world and I I wanted to do that.

Um, our health is our health is something we take for granted until it's not in its until it's until we're sick. We just take it for granted every day.

I'm so intrigued by the fact that you left a and I'm sure that like people were freaking out. So I'd love for you to share your story like I I left them. Ah the career in law to become a network marketing distributor and I can tell you.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Yeah.

Hayley Hobson
After like years I didn't have a lot as long a career as you did I was practicing for maybe 5 years but I can't tell you how much crap I got from people like I was like the but lack sheep of the family people thought I was nuts you I went through all that education all that money in tuition and direct sales. Didn't have the best rap at the time. So what was it like for you to take such a leap.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Well when you when you look at what I do for doTERRA which is I'm in charge of research all of their medical Humanitarian work that they do around the world. Um, and Priridian Health care I'm I'm still ah very much a medical executive working outside of the traditional medical institutions.

So it wasn't that big of a stretch in that respect. But what was what was an interesting stretch for me is instead of being just local I now have a much larger and broader reach and talking with. Ah, like I would have never met you I would have never been on your podcast I would have never been talking about metabolic health I would have never you know medicine. Most people understand this but medicine is a business I love medicine. It's what I was born to do. There is nothing. There is no part of the world I feel more at home in professionally than. Ah, hospital room with a sick child in it. Um, that that's where I'm at my finest. Um, but the business side of medicine is like the business side of anything and as I became more and more an administrator and less and less a clinician. I realized that I wanted to be involved in the solution and the solution really is prevention and and reversing the effects of metabolic disease that North American Lifestyle is inflicted on pretty much everyone. There are exceptions to that of course. But um, we have a we have a lot of work to do in this area. It's a public health emergency. It's ah it's a worldwide problem anywhere where we've exported this type of lifestyle has the same sorts of issues. There are of course exceptions.

Hayley Hobson
Is it only North America or is it really like a worldwide problem as well.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Um, but we have a lot of work to do diabetes and other diseases that's associated with metabolic disease are are public health emergencies that are going to cause us humongous problems as a society moving forward. They're causing them now. And we need to get in front of them and it's hard for medicine to do that and so I actually feel that doTERRA is uniquely positioned to do that for millions of people they can get need a knee with. Millions of people supporting them in healthy lifestyle change that will help them and their families to achieve their dreams and that's a big deal to me. So if you're asking me why I'm here. It's to do this type of work is to help families live their healthiest lives possible.

And you feel like you can do that better in this kind of situation versus in the in the hospital did you feel I mean I want it like you don't have to answer it Steve 1 but it's wondering if you felt like your hands were tied at all.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
No no, my hands weren't tied. It's just that when you're in the hospital. The horses left the barn. Um and and really the the issues that prevent um problems from occurring those have to be addressed long before you get to the hospital.

Hayley Hobson
Right.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Ah, my colleagues and I are very good at treating those processes that land you in hospitals we're excellent at it. But we're not very good at preventing those problems from occurring in the first place we're not built or structured that way. Um, and and so we we really have to change as an industry. And I would I feel like at doTERRA with this metabolic awakening that that we are experiencing as a company we're we're on the leading edge of that change process and it's from the.

Hayley Hobson
Well, let's talk about Let's talk about Metabolic Health for a second. Um I I I think I have a perception that most people don't pay enough attention or even care about their quote Unquote. Metabolic Health or even their health until it's too late and um, you know we have We have been trained to not fix something until it's broken and.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Right. Yep.

Hayley Hobson
I have a very different situation I had ever since I was a young kid I had a lot of digestive distress and so when I was about twelve years old I went a hundred percent well not 100% I ate fish but I went mostly plant based I didn't do any dairy any red meat. Any um yeah.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Yeah, that's what I do too.

Hayley Hobson
And then when I was in my early 30 s I found out that I was gluten and tolerant and when I was actually in my twenty s back backdate a little bit I was told I shouldn't eat any nuts corn seeds flour Sugar. Caffe I mean the list went on and on which by the way I'll tell you I eat all of that now. Um, yeah, but it was getting stuck in my gut. It was getting stuck in my colon. It was causing a lot of abdominal pain and so then when I was in my early 30 s I found out that I had a twerk in my colon.

Host and say some of that list is good for you.

And first of all my cone's on the wrong side of my body so it's called a malrotation of the Colon. My dad who is my radilogologist actually had to look it up. He had never seen it before in 40 years so my cola is on the wrong side of my body and that's not necessarily a big deal but it's all twisted and twerked up so it doesn't the food doesn't pass through it in that normal you know peristalsis. Type of situation and so I was constantly bloated and gasy and nauseous and having diarrhea and vomiting and like I could not digest food my whole life. So I took matters into my own hands right before I got into doTERRA that's actually how I found myself intoterra was part of that process and I'd started trying to figure out like how I could heal my own gut.

Interesting.

Hayley Hobson
Naturally with real food enzymes and anti-inflammatory products and juicing and um, spiritual and and mindfulness awareness and all of the things. It's been my lifestyle. It's been my pathway for the last fifteen years and um, so now that I you know once I once I got better. Like I I was at a point like like a rock bottom about twelve years ago I could literally couldn't even eat food I was throwing up everything for weeks I I am so proactive now in my health so this is my point I'm taking it's taking me early long time to get there but I'm very productive my health I don't want to wait for a breakdown again.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
First you have what we what we need is for people to do that much more that same thing that you did for your health and wellness everybody needs to do if we take charge of our own health if we do the things that lead to health. Then we avoid the problems that require doctorslthough. They'll always be Necessary. We'll always need doctors and surgeons and specialists. But we can avoid so much so much of of of pain and of of worry if we. Were to be like you and take charge of our own health and wellness on a regular basis in our lives.

And yeah, and the thing is is like we have um unless the pain isn't big enough. People are not prioritizing what we call things like emotional health mental Health cellular health and they think they're fine right.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Yep, and they don't understand how linked they all are they don't understand how length they all are yeah it is Metabolism is so Central Metabolic Health is so central to the whole. Um.

Hayley Hobson
Well, that's a lot of new evidence though over the last decade or so.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Anything we do whether it's improving our sleep improving our relationships with those we care about decreasing the stress in our lives it impacts our metabolic health. It's not just diet and Exercise. We've been banging the diet and exercise drum for a long time. Yes, It's incredibly effective. To make healthy changes in the way that we exercise the way that we eat but we seem to sometimes forget how important relationships healthy relationships are how important decreasing stress is in our lives. How important sleep is restorative sleep is so important. If We if we don't take care of ourselves in all of these areas of our lives. We're going to find ourselves. Um, not achieving our goals from a metabolic Health perspective.

So let's talk about what damage can be done when we don't actually take charge of our metabolic health like let's actually can you define for me what Metabolic Health is and all of the problems that we're creating I think people see surface level things like I can't lose weight or they see surface level things like.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Yeah, run.

Hayley Hobson
You know I'm getting older and so my memory is going or I have aches and pains in my joints or my muscles are tired or I don't have a lot of energy but they they make these assumptions they have these thoughts they believe the thoughts that they've been taught that this is normal.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Yeah, so there's so much there to unpack haley in what you just said I I think what I'd say is is that metabolic health and cellular health are really inseparable whether we're talking about our memory and our and. And how memory is affected by aging or whether we're talking about how our body handles blood sugar or cholesterol or how our blood pressure is managed in our cardiovascular system. All of these systems. Are dependent on healthy cells and structures to accomplish what they need to do for our body to be healthy and if we the problem with metabolism is is that when things get out of balance when they're out of whack. It's silent. You don't know. Without checking that your blood sugar is too high. You don't know without checking that your blood pressure is too high these kinds of metabolism problems are silent. The only way you know you have a problem is if you can measure them and track them. So. There are ways to do that your doctor does that you can go to Walgreens and and get blood sugar testing kits and all sorts of things can be done for us to check them. But we don't generally do it and so because we don't know the numbers. We don't know where you're at and if you don't know where you are you might.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Think you know where you want to go but you can't get there if you don't know where you're starting from so data is incredibly important. Good medical data so that you can take yourself on a health journey and watch those numbers improve as you make changes so many of us myself included have. Gone to great effort to lose weight for a daughter's wedding or something but then that weight just comes right Back. We don't We don't really understand how important it is for us to make healthy choices every day moving forward if we did and we could track not just the number on the scale. But we could track how our cells are responding to what we are doing Now. We're talking and there are tools out there that allow us to do that Now. We utilize them not enough I'm talking about continuous glucose monitors Blood Pressure Cuffs. Um.

Hayley Hobson
So what kind of tools are you talking about?

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
You can get your cholesterol checked on a regular basis your a one C checked on a regular basis to to see how you are performing and track the progress that you're making as you go on a metabolic Health journey.

Hayley Hobson
But you have to go somewhere to do that and I can hear people already moaning like I can't even pick up groceries from my house now I got to go get my metabolic health tested like what do you? What would be your suggestion.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
My suggestion would be to understand that we are at the beginning of a metabolic health awakening right now where all these solutions are going to be much more present doTERRA is making some of those possible for Us. We'll be talking with you about that in the near Future. Um, and. And those can come right to you but they're available. They're right now and and if yeah, yeah, yeah, since since we're coming close to to a midterm election Absolutely but the but the point I'm trying to make is is that.

Kind of like ah like a absent like a voting and and putting it the you go You don't have to go to ballot anymore.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
All this information is gettable right now you don't have to go to a doctor to get it most of the time it is available. You can find it and you should get this and use this information if you are truly interested in harnessing the power of your um. Metabolic health to improve your ah health span and your longevity. This information is so critical and nobody's using it. Everybody's looking at a number on a scale and that's just it doesn't it's not the number that's not the number to track. The number to track is how are my cells doing. How are my insides doing and you can get those numbers today and my answer to those who are like oh it's too hard. Well then I just well we're coming up with solutions for you but until we have those for you go get them yourself dang it. It's it's not that hard.

Well here's what I did I took a blood panel analysis a couple of months ago and I'm going to take another one probably in about two months and I had I had all my data tested and now I've been.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Good.

Hayley Hobson
Biohacking might for like I said for the last you know 27 years actually but um I was my cells tested as though I was an 18 to 20 year old which I was like super stoked about it's like yeah so it's like what I'm what I'm doing what I can I have data now that what I'm doing is actually working and it's funny.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Yeah, biological aids. Ah.

Hayley Hobson
People always say to me things like Heyley you have so much energy or how do you get so much done or you're so focused or you're so driven or you you know you always are so in such a good move. This is why I'm putting things in my body and working things on you know, either in my body on my body in my brain and I have. Now I have like legit data that it's actually working.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Yeah, so what? what? you're finding what those numbers and scales are all determining is they're showing cellular health and giving it and putting it to a scale so that you can see what cellular health does for your body if our cells are healthy. We're healthy. And but we're not looking at at those numbers enough and so I love the fact that that you're doing that. Um I think it's I think it's helpful and useful. There's a lot of controversy right now around biological age or metabolic age. But that's coming science is getting better. Resolution is getting so much better and these numbers are getting much more meaningful even in the last five years these numbers have improved so much that you can now start really to trend and as we move forward and as the technology improves and the science around the technology improves these numbers will. We'll give very clear pictures of where we're at.

Um, what? what? what's controversial about it like you said it's controversial. What's the controversial subject.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Well, anytime you use measurements ah to determine a metabolic age or a biological Age. You're having to transport those or or interpret those onto a scale that then tells you based on your numbers how that translates into a number of years. Filter that you move this data from to get to this age related number is not yet Perfect. It's Good. It's good. It's it's good, but it's not yet Perfect. There's a lot of work yet to be done. There.

Okay, got it. So let's talk about like I'm I'm not gonna lie I'm into some of the superficial things too like I definitely like feeling more energy and I love having more energy because more energy for me and being in a better mood means.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Um, no.

Hayley Hobson
Deeper things like better connection with my daughter like I one of the things I'm like super proud of is how connected I am with my like my teenage daughter like I have such a good time with her. She's like 1 of the most amazing people. Funniest people like what I like lifetime best friend.

You know I love the relationship that I have with her that I'm building with her and I attribute that to like feeling good like when you're a parent and you're feeling crappy or you're feeling tired or you're feeling exhausted or you're feeling overwhelmed or you just don't have enough energy and oomph. You know what's the first thing that sacrifices is your relationships and the time that you spend with people. So.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Um, yes.

That's one of the things that I want to say like I'm super proud of but I also like the superficial things like I like that I don't have wrinkles like somebody my age would have I like that you know when I do step on the scale I like the number that I see I like that I look good in my skinny jeans I you know I like that my skin looks great. So.

Um, yeah.

Let's talk about some of those benefits again that you can get from having really good cellular and metabolic help not just things like because I have a feeling that some people are go Well I'm not going to get diabetes or I mean maybe that's a concern of people or oh I don't I don't have any Alzheimer's in my family That's not going to be me but like I don't.

Yes.

Know any woman that doesn't want to look younger than they were ten years ago

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
yeah yeah I don't know any guy that doesn't either. Um, so longevity and um metabolic health are are quite linked and if you want to your daughter. And the connections that you have with others Haley I want to help you kind of solidify this understanding that you've gained so scientifically what we've learned in the last um I don't know 101012 years how um we've learned how important these connections truly are to our health. There was a ah long, long, long long longitudinal study of um, started off looking just at men world war ii veterans came home from the war and we started following them in the harvard longevity study. And the most important factor in their longevity was the quality of their relationships and that was that was mind-boggling to the researchers they thought it would be their diet. You know their stress levels or something like that. But it was it was uniformly. Their. Um, relationships that ended up predicting who had the most health span to their lifespan and I I cannot emphasize enough how important that relationship with your daughter will be to your ongoing health. Um.

Hayley Hobson
And it's like not just my daughter I mean like I live for the relationships that I have with my friends with my family with my yeah hey yeah.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
Make sure that. Yeah, I'm just pointing out the 1 you mentioned, but the more connections we have the more healthy inputs. The more service we give the more love we share the more love that is returned. We are social animals. Our biology responds to.

Um, yeah.

Dr. Russ Osguthorpe
That sort of interaction in ways that we can now start to measure when you're connecting with human beings your blood pressure goes down your metabolism gets better everything about your body with human connection improves when. When life is right with those that you interact with the most so investing in those relationships is important I just wanted to underline that for you.

Yeah, no 100% I love it and it's like you know I just I see so many other parents out there who are disconnected adults who are disconnected. They're not focused. They their their level of patience is really you know shot they are. You know, not appreciative for every moment that is literally friend than my daughter. This is a funny story. It has nothing do with longevity but it's just like you know I could see some people getting annoyed with this but I was laughing and I thought it was so funny. My daughter put together a slideshow for what her Christmas and hanukkah. Wish list was she said you know dear mommy and Daddy I understand I might not get all of this and maybe it's not all unnecessary, but for your review I put together a slideshow exactly you can send it to anybody else in the family.

What it does all right? So I'll tell you the way that I'm taking it and you can share with me any of the science that I might be missing behind it. But what I'm doing every day is I'm taking one of The MetaPWR Assist capsules about 30 minutes before my biggest meal of the day I tend to intermittent fast. So I might not take the. Capsule like when I'm breaking my fast with a juice or or coffee or a yogurt but I will break it with my big lunch in the afternoon I'm also when I wake up in the morning I fill my bottle bottle with water and with ice and then I put about 5 drops of the metapower essential oil in here.

Some people have asked me what the differences between this and and the old version of slim and Sassus. So I'd love for you to address that I also sitting at my desk I might pop a beadlet or I might pop a piece of gum if I have a craving I usually don't have cravings in the morning but maybe towards the evening and then I will take about.

3 to 5 of the soft gels intermittently throughout the day some with my morning supplements some when I wake up some with my evening supplements. So that's the that's the beadlit the oil the assist and um, yep, and then the advantage I will.

Sometime in the late morning I will put the advantaged collagen powder in a glass in a glass with about four ounces of water I mix it up and then I put some mice in it I like it cold and it's just really my first flavored drink of the day and so some people have been asking me things like well do you need all of it. You know I didn't get it last month because I could only get the kit now. Obviously everything's available individually. My suggestion has been well. No, you don't need anything but I would suggest that you try the whole product line at once because it's meant to be used together and that if you don't want to continue on the gum or the bead lit fine. There are some core products that you want in your body.

Yeah, the core products the big 3 as I call them are the soft gel the MetaPWR softgel, MetaPWR Assist. and MetaPWR Advantage. Those are the big 3: the beadlet and the gum are products that are used for some people to help them with cravings throughout the day or however, they I like the beadlets. But um I don't think that they're they're being used to help my cravings as much. It's just that I like to have sometimes something in my mouth other than an NMNif you know what? I We really do I like them. But.

Those 3 products are the are the the big 3 so let's go through them really quickly. I'll take you through really briefly the science. So MetaPWR Advantage is ah a product that was related to an older doTERRA product called Slim and Sassy as you already mentioned what's different about MetaPWR. Um the softgel. Or MetaPWR oil from Slim and Sassy is that the ratios of the oils involved were changed. So if you remember the discussion that we had at convention. You could see that we tested a number of different ratios of the oils within slim and sassy. And what we found was is that when we tweaked grapefruit oil grapefruit oil plays um a larger role in MetaPWRthe oil than in slim and sassy and ah that particular oil I believe is the backbone of what is inhibiting fat cell maturation that we saw in vitro. Ah, multiple month period decreased about 15 % in patients that were taking the assist capsules versus the placebo. So um, what that means is post-prandially is our blood sugar spikes after we eat the so the peaks are less high. And those peaks are what when we when our peaks get really high when our blood sugar levels spike what happens is is our proteins attach to those sugars and oxidize and that's what leads to premature aging biological aging metabolic aging. However, you want to call it and as you smooth those out using a cyst you end up. Increasing we believe you'll end up increasing longevity longevity is something that is very difficult to test because you have to follow people throughout a whole lifetime. But we know that by decreasing blood sugar our our cellular health improves so two randomized controlled trials on assist showing that blood sugar peaks. Postrandily as well as the area under the curve throughout the day is decreased when you use um assist with each meal sec. The third product is MetaPWR Advantage main ingredients in that. Yeah sure.

I and I just interrupt you for a second. So with the assist what you're saying basically is if you take the assist before your meal or as you're eating your meal. What's going to happen is is as you're chewing and absorbing your food and digesting your insulin levels are not going to spike which is it actually also leads to. Yeah, yeah, what? what? the? What the product does is it. It inhibits blood sugar from being absorbed into your bloodstream. It binds to blood sugar by it doesn't bind to blood sugar. It binds to enzymes that break sugars down so your sugars don't end up getting absorbed and about. 10 to 15% depending on the person average of around 13% your blood sugar falls so huge numbers actually those are those are clinically significant numbers and these were not in vitro tests these were in vivo human beings double blind placebo control trials. Um, third piece. Is ah, the third product is meta power advantage which as I was saying has 2 main ingredients. This is the collagen and nmm or Nicotinamide Mononucleotide and and nmn is an ingredient that is in the biosynthetic pathway that leads to a d a d is the molecule that allows your cells to function na d is used in the electron transport chain in the mitochondria to create atp atp is. How your cells use energy. It's how they function so we've there've been multiple clinical trials on nmm and nmn has been shown to improve performance of athletes improve recovery of athletes improve sleep.

Ah, restorative sleep decrease fatigue and um, improve clinically the signs of fine lines and wrinkles within the face as well. Um, so the and nmm essentially as a molecule as as we age our nad levels fall pretty steadily as we age. And when we give our bodies and nmmen our na d levels return to where they were years ago and our cells now have the ability to function with a level of a d that they did ten years earlier which is really quite remarkable if you think about it so we're providing ourselves what they need to. Act like they did when they were younger. Um, so that's why we believe that athletes have better performance better recovery better sleep the outcomes that have been seen with ennemen.

And well not only that but it takes about 4 like two and a half to 4 hours to get into your body because it has to actually go in super slow because of the uncomfortableness of that. You'd have to spend a whole lot of money every month to.

Yeah, it's ah it's unnecessary. Um, but whatever I I believe that dietary supplementation through the gut with and nmn is sufficient. Um, most people in in the longevity scientific field believe the same. Um, there are plenty of people who are advocates of using steps along this biosynthetic pathway whether that's nmn or N R or N adh as a way to boost and ad levels in your body and we at doTERRA are. Have done small clinical trials showing that our product does raise a D levels by 20% in our body we're doing larger trials right now with that as Well. So much to follow much to come on that but nad is a molecule that we we've not paid enough attention to in Medicine. In terms of how it can help us with our health span improving our health span and that's such an important aspect of what we do.
