A stress-free holiday season begins with MINDSET

Hey There!

Well, we made it through Thanksgiving. What did your day look like? Did you relax and enjoy friends and family or were you chomping at the bit to hit the sales?

Some people, even before the dinner dishes were cleared, grabbed their jackets and headed out to early Black Friday sales.

What is Black Friday anyway? It’s when retail stores advertise massive deals on merchandise to get shoppers through their doors - and it works! But other than being the busiest shopping day of the year, Black Friday has some history behind it and it has nothing to do with shopping.

According to History.com the first recorded use of the term Black Friday was used in 1869 after the stock market plunged and scads of people were ruined financially.

Fast forward to the 1950s. Philadelphia police used the term Black Friday to describe huge numbers of people flooding the city on the Friday after Thanksgiving to watch the football game between the Army and Navy.

So, here’s the myth….

By the late 1980s retailers began using the term Black Friday to describe the day that businesses went out of the red and into the black. They circulated the myth in order to boost business the Fridayafter Thanksgiving.

Were they successful?

Just take a look at the number of pop-tents lined up in front of stores days before they open for Black Friday sales. News reports show craziness that seems to get worse every year. People fight with each other over sale items and some are even carted off to jail.

Why? Greed and stress.

Instead of enjoying the holidays, many people get super stressed. It’s not just shopping at the mall and in big department stores that does it. Some people get frazzled over family gatherings and instead of looking forward to them, they can’t wait for them to be over.

We used to go back to my parents every year for the holidays. They were getting older and my mom’s stress over cooking and cleaning was getting more and more obvious.

So a few years ago we all decided to get away for Thanksgiving. We choose a different location every year. We pick a place that's easy to get to and fun for kids and we all have a blast.

The best part is, it's stress free.

We created our own tradition of sitting by the pool on Black Friday and taking advantage of all the online sales. Holiday shopping done!

Preparation for the next wave of holidays has been full-on since Black Friday. For parties over the next month we have a potluck so every one shares in the planning and prep. By keeping it simple we just get to enjoy each other.

A stress-free holiday season begins with MINDSET. It’s all in how you choose to look at it. Right? What are your priorities? Once you choose to minimize stress, you can decide what that might look like and plan accordingly.

XO
