The Lies We Tell Ourselves – A Lesson From St. Nick

So here we are, flying toward another end of the year. Where does the time go? Seriously it is crazy to think that Holidays are upon us already. I really love this time of the year. I love the excitement of the holidays, the surprises, the gifts, the family Thanksgiving, the movies on TV, the wonder of the children and the general activities that happen in our town. Even though I am Jewish, my husband isn’t and so we celebrate Christmas and all holidays. Our kids love Santa of course, although the older one now knows the little “secret”! Isn’t it crazy this beautiful little fantasy that we create to make Christmas so special? The kids love it and it absolutely blows their mind away. I was speaking to my husband about the day we have to break it to our youngest daughter, Madeline that it isn’t really true. It was just a little “lie” we were telling her. And guess what we were all “lied” to, but it was for good times right?

The thing that dawned on me during that conversation was not this little lie we tell our kids or this magical fantasy we created – there are different ways to look at it – it’s not this so called “lie” about St. Nick that we created, but rather the other lies we tell ourselves!

Some people are pretty anti – Christmas and other holidays that we have created to make those times a little more special for family and kids. They get quite worked up about it and I ask myself why. Really the question(s) they should be asking themselves is…”What about the lies I am telling myself?” That may seem harsh but it is true, because we are all telling ourselves lies to some degree or at some stage in our life and those are more damaging than Santa Claus.

Here are some ways that we lie to ourselves every day:

I am not good enough – This is has to be the biggest lie we tell ourselves. We don’t pursue the careers we want to, we don’t pursue our dreams, we don’t pursue the relationships we want, we don’t apply for the jobs we really want, we don’t sign up for the training that will help us, we don’t compete in the marathon that we want to do! Why? Because we don’t think we are good enough and we are scared to fail! We tell ourselves we can’t do that, we don’t have the knowledge or education, I could never do that, I wouldn’t get the job any way, nobody would love me, I will just get my heart broken…and many other variations. It was their fault – Quite often we blame other people for the way that we feel or for our results. We blame our partner, our friends, our boss, our colleagues, the President, the Bank Manager, the waitress, the other guy driving the car. We blame them for the way we feel, for us getting angry, jealous, not getting the promotion, over spending, our debt and so much more. It is no ones fault but our own. We need to acknowledge our own responsibility and choices that we have in life. Yes we may have been dealt a bad hand, but it is up to us to choose the quality of thoughts and how we will respond to the situation. I don’t have the time – This is a popular lie that we all tell ourselves. We know there are things we should be doing that will make our lives a whole lot better, yet we don’t do them because we don’t have enough time. We are too busy at work, we are too busy cleaning, too busy running around doing errands, too busy networking or whatever it is taking up all your time. Yes it may appear that way, but the real truth is, that everyone has the same amount of time during the course of a day. From the unemployed, unproductive guy sitting on his sofa that never achieves anything to the busiest most creative entrepreneur who somehow seems to achieve and do so much. We all have twenty-four hours a day and if something is sucking up your time and stopping you from doing something that will serve you in a better way, then get help! Start making time. If you want it…get help. That’s just the way I am – Too often when we get the results that we do in life or we have disappointments, we just give up and try to rationalize everything, by stating that is just the way it is meant to be or that is the way you are. That is not true and that is a lie that is keeping you trapped exactly where you are. You have to go through pain, discomfort and challenges in life in order to grow and become better. Don’t accept that lie that you have been telling yourself any longer.

It’s time to live the truth and call out the lies that keep you stuck. @hayleyhobson (Click to Tweet!)

The only lie you should be living right now is embracing that chubby little, gift giving, feel good old guy with the white hair and the white beard. So use that image of St Nick, to remind yourself of those limiting beliefs that are holding you back and focus on the new you that you want to become. Have a happy holidays.
